I have been looking for different ways to help my students to recognize the keyboard better. The best way, of course, is to teach them songs they recognize and would love to practice (especially with younger children). Songs such as Jingle Bells, Twinkle Stars are some easy ones in the first couple lessons, and I have tried to add Fur Elise to expand the list. Instead of holding their hands in a fixed position like most beginner songs do, this song will need their hands to jump around, search for keys and play it with the correct fingers.
It can be challenging for beginners under 7 years old, but as long as they love it and practice at home. They can do very well and be proud of what they can accomplish.
Play them as if they were all quarter notes, and hold the pedal when left hand is played.
